CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell in their double header to non-conference opponent Whitworth as they fell in game one 10-6 and fell in game two 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season impact: With the losses, the Sagehens drop below .500 for the first time this season at 4-6 overall while Whitworth improves to 4-1 to start its season.
The Pirates were led by Matthew Nelson who went 2-4 with four RBI and a run scored.
The Pirates got ahead early in game one as they plated three runs in the top of the first after an RBI double and a two-run homer gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead.
The Pirates added one more to their total after JT Phelan scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 4-0 after the top of the second.
Whitworth scored for the third-straight inning as they scored on a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 5-0 heading into the bottom of the third.
The Sagehens got on the board in the bottom of the third as Nishioka homered to center field to plate three as Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead down to just 5-3.
Whitworth came back in the top of the fifth and added three more runs to their total after a three-run homer by Nelson pushed the lead to 8-3.
The Sagehens got those three runs back in the bottom of the sixth as two errors in the inning by the Pirates' defense led to the Sagehens scoring three runs as they cut the lead down to just 8-6.
Whitworth got some insurance runs in the top of the ninth as they strung together a few hits and an RBI single followed by a RBI double gave the Pirates a 10-6 lead. The Sagehens couldn't come back in the bottom of the ninth as they dropped the first game of the double header.
The Sagehens were led by Nishioka who went 3-4 with two home runs four RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Nolan McCafferty tallied two hits as he went 2-4 in the loss.
The Sagehens struck first in game two as Nishioka blasted his second home run of the day to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead after the first.
The Pirates took over the lead in the top of the fourth after Bird hit an RBI single to center field and then a RBI double down the line by Lamberty plated two Pirates as Whitowrth took a 3-2 lead.
Whitworth tacked on one more in the fifth as Nelson connected for a solo shot to left field to extend the lead to 4-2.
The Sagehens came roaring back in the bottom of the seventh after Troupe scored on a wild pitch, Nishioka blasted a two-run bomb to right field for his third home run of the afternoon to reclaim the lead at 5-4 heading into the eighth inning.
Junior Cade Hulse then extended that lead by one as he hit his first home run of the season over the left field wall to give the Sagehens a 6-4 lead heading into the ninth.
After an infield single, a walk and a sacrifice bunt, a costly error by the Sagehen defense allowed a run to score and set up the Pirates with the go-ahead run to reach safely.
Whitworth was able to score the tying run on an infield single and then the go-ahead run came around to score on a fielder's choice to give the Pirates a 7-6 lead heading to the bottom of the ninth.
The Sagehens brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth but was unable to get a rally going as they fell in all three games in their non-conference series to Whitworth.
