Baseball: Sagehens Explode For 21 Runs in Win Over Southern Vermont

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated non-conference opponent Southern Vermont 21-1 in seven innings at Alumni Field in the California Classic.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-11 overall while Southern Vermont drops to 2-6 overall.

The Sagehens were led by freshman Tyler Yoshihara who went a perfect 4-4 with two runs scored. Freshman Nolan McCafferty also went a perfect 3-3 with three runs scored and a career-high seven RBI and junior Cade Hulse also went 3-3 with three runs scored and four RBI.  

The mountaineers were led by Zack Stacey, Noah DuBois and Anthony Mercuri who each had one hit in the loss.

Senior Nicholas Radich got the win for the Sagehens as he went five innings gave up one run on two hits and struck out three to earn his third win of the season.

Pomona-Pitzer's bats exploded for 21 runs against the Mountaineers this afternoon, which is the most runs scored this season by the Sagehens.

The Mountaineers came out and struck first in the top of the first after a RBI single by DuBoise brought home Stacey to take a 1-0 lead.

The Sagehens responded in the bottom of the first with four runs after a RBI single from Hulse and a RBI double from McCafferty gave the Sagehens a 4-1 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer plated seven in the second inning after RBI singles from senior Kevin Jordan and Hulse and RBI doubles from McCafferty and junior Duncan Skerrett pushed the lead to 11-1.

The Sagehens added two more in the bottom of the third as McCafferty brought home junior Bryce Rogan on a sacrifice fly and junior Matt Omori brought home senior Tanner Nishioka ona fielder's choice to push the lead to 13-1.

Pomona-Pitzer exploded again for a seven-run inning in the bottom of the fourth as Hulse brought home two on a double to left center and McCafferty brought home two more on a double to left. Omori capped off the inning with a three-run homer to center field as the Sagehens extended their lead to 20-1 over the Mountaineers.

The Sagehens got their final run of the afternoon as freshman Jake Lialios singled down the left field line to bring home Omori as Pomona-Pitzer took care of the Mountaineers by 20 runs in the California Classic.
