Baseball: Sagehens Take All Three Games Of Sixth Street Rivalry

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team completed their regular season sweep over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 8-3 and 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at Arce Field.

Season Impact: With the wins, the Sagehens improve to 15-15 overall and 7-8 in conference play.

The Sagehens were led by senior Tanner Nishioka who went 2-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Junior Cade Hulse, junior Adam Hinthorne, freshman Nolan McCafferty and freshman Jeremiah Quezada also had multi-hit games as they tallied two hits each in the win.

Freshman Jeremy Jess got the win for the Sagehens as he turned in a very impressive performance as he recorded his first career complete game as he went nine innings, only surrendered four hits and two earned runs in the win.

The Stags were led by Trey Smith who went 1-4 with two RBI and a run scored in the loss.

CMS struck first in game one as scored on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

The Sagehens took over the game as they plated five runners in the top of the third. Junior Bryce Rogan got the big inning going for the Sagehens as he tripled to right field to bring in senior Kevin Jordan and Hinthorne. Pomona-Pitzer then scored two more off of RBI's from Nishioka and Quezada and Hulse capped the inning off scoring on a passed ball to take a 5-1 lead over the Stags.

CMS got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth as Smith homered to left center but the Sagehens got the two runs right back in their next at-bats with two RBI singles from Quezada and junior Matt Omori to push the lead to 7-3.

Pomona-Pitzer added one more in the top of the ninth as McCafferty brought home Nishioka on a sacrifice fly as the Sagehens cruised to a game-one victory over the Stags.

Game Two:

The Sagehens were led by Rogan who went 3-5 with two runs scored and two RBI in the win.

Junior Nicholas Radich earned the win as he went six innings and gave up five runs on eight hits in the win. Senior Casey Hershfield came on in relief to pick up his second save of the year and only gave up one hit in three innings of work.

The Stags were led by Deji Andrew who went 3-4 with one run scored in the loss.

The Sagehens got out ahead of the Stags early on as Rogan homered in his first plate appearance to give the Sagehens a 2-0 lead. CMS answered in the bottom of the first with two of their own to even the score at 2-2 after one inning of play.

Pomona-Pitzer had another big inning as they plated four runners in the top of the third. Nishioka brought in three runs with one swing of the bat as he hit his 14th home run of the season followed by a RBI single by Quezada to take a 6-2 lead over the Stags.

CMS chipped away at the deficit as they scored one run in the third and two more in the sixth to cut the lead down to 6-5 but MCCafferty belted a home run in the top of the seventh and Hershfield came on with a stellar relief outing to complete the three-game series win over CMS in the Sixth Street Rivalry series.
