Baseball: Sagehens Win Sixth Straight With 11-2 Win At La Verne

LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 11-2 on Friday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens have now won six-straight conference games and improve to 16-15 overall and 8-8 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by juniors Bryce Rogan and Matt Omori who each tallied a three-hit afternoon. Rogan went 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored while Omori went 3-4 with a RBI and two runs scored.

Senior David Gerics got the win for the Sagehens as he went a complete game with nine strikeouts and scattered nine hits for two runs in his outing.

The Leopards were led by Christopher Peres who went 2-3 with a run scored in the loss.

The Sagehens scored in their first at-bats as freshman Nolan McCafferty brought in senior Kevin Jordan on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead.

The Leopards also scored in their first plate appearances as they took their only lead of the game as they struck for back to back RBI singles to take a 2-1 lead. After surrendering two runs in the first, Gerics settled in on the mound and shut down the Leopards offense for the rest of the afternoon.

The Sagehens went on to score in four-straight innings off of the Leopards' ace as Rogan blasted a solo shot down the right field line in the third and freshman Tyler Yoshihara and Rogan notched RBI's in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Omori singled home junior Cade Hulse and junior Adam Hinthorne brought in freshman Jeremiah Quezada on a sacrifice fly in the fifth as Jordan came around to score in the sixth off of an error by the La Verne second baseman as the Sagehens extended their lead to 7-2 after six innings of play.

Pomona-Pitzer added some insurance in the eighth as senior Tanner Nishioka hit his 15th home run of the year and the Sagehens piled on three more runs in the top of the ninth off of RBI's from Hinthorne and Jordan as the Sagehens dominated in game one of their three-game series against La Verne.
