CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team split in their double header with non-conference opponent Whitman as they took game one 12-3 but fell in game two 8-2 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 2-1 overall on their opening weeknd.
Tyler Yoshiara had a great start to his 2018 season as he went seven innings and surrendered three runs on four hits and struck out nine. Nicholas Radich and Luka Green come on in relief and each threw a shutout inning to seal the win.
The Blues jumped out ahead in game one in the very first inning after a one-out double put a man in scoring position and was later brought in by a throwing error to give Whitman a 1-0 lead to start the game.
The Sagehens evened up the score in the bottom of the second as they strung together a few hits and Andrew Phillips brought home Quezada on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1-1.
Pomona-Pitzer took the lead just an inning later as Rogan tripled off of the left field wall and Cade Hulse was able to sacrifice him in to give the Sagehens a 2-1 lead but the Blues responded in their next at-bats
The Sagehens broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth as they put up five runs on the board to take a 7-1 lead. Pomona-Pitzer added another big inning in the bottom of the eighth as they plated four runners with RBI's from Quezada, Rob Simsiman and Phillips as the Sagehens cruised to a big win in game one of the double header.
The Sagehens were led by Rogan and Hulse who each went 2-4 in the loss.
The Blues came out and jumped ahead again in the first inning, but this time strung together a series of hits to plate the first runner of the game to take a 1-0 lead.
Whitman went on to plate runners in the first three innings as they added one in the second and two in the third to take an early 4-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer got on the board in the fourth as Nolan McCafferty singled home Hulse and again in the sixth as Jess doubled home Hulse but Whitman brought out the bats in game two as they went on to score three more late in the game to win game two of the double header.
