CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer baseball team split in their Sunday non-conference double header with a 5-3 win over Bates and fell 6-3 to Castleton on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: with the split, the Sagehens move to 4-2 overall this season and have yet to enter SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Jeremy Jess who went 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI in the win. Jess also got the start for the Sagehens and went five innings, gave up two runs and struck out five batters for his second-straight win of the season. Cade Hulse also went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Brian Knapp also tallied a multi-hit game with a 2-5 performance and a run scored.
The Sagehens did their damage in the first inning as they plated four runs in the inning to jump out to an early lead. Jess helped out his own cause as he brought in the first runner of the game with an RBI single through the right side to bring in Knapp. Bates went on to balk to bring in the second runner of the inning followed by a Duncan Skerrett single to center field to bring in Jess to cap off the big inning for Pomona-Pitzer.
Bates got on the board in the third inning on a sacrifice fly and scored again in the fifth on an RBI single up the middle to cut the lead down to 4-2 but the Sagehens tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh after Hulse doubled to right center to bring home Jess to extend the lead to 5-2.
Nicholas Radich came on in a relief role as he went the final four innings of the game. Bates got one more run back in the bottom of the ninth after a double to center field but Radich stayed strong to close out the game and picked up the save.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped ahead again in their second game of the afternoon as Quezada singled to right center in the first inning to bring home Knapp to take a 1-0 lead over the Spartans.
Castleton responded with a run of their own in the very next inning with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1. The Spartans took the lead in the third after a defensive miscue plated two runs in the inning for the Spartans as they took a 3-1 lead.
The Sagehens came back and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth after Jess singled home Skerrett and Quezada followed up with a single to right field to bring home William Choi to tie the game at 3-3.
The turning point in the game came in the eighth inning as Castleton connected with a three-run homer to take a late 6-3 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer was able to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't spark a rally as they fell in game two of their non-conference double header.
