CLAREMONT, CA. -- The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team defeated non-conference opponent Rutgers-Newark 12-5 on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the win the Sagehens improve to 11-4 overall and remain at 5-1 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led three stars tonight in the win. Jeremiah Quezada went 4-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, Brian Knapp went 3-5 with three RBI's and notched his fourth home run of the season and Jack Hanley went a perfect 2-2 with three walks and drove in four Sagehens while scoring twice himself.
Brett Super got the start in today's game and earned his second win of the season as he went four complete innings gave up four runs on seven hits and fanned two batters.
Rutgers-Newark got on the board early on in the game as they notched a run in their first at-bats to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Sagehens quickly erased their deficit and responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Hanley got the runs going with two batted in on a single down the right field line and then Quezada was able to score on a throwing error to give Pomona-Pitzer a 4-1 lead.
The Sagehens had back-to-back big innings as they plated three more in the bottom of the second. Knapp kept his hot streak going with a two-run homer to right field followed by a Quezada solo shot later in the inning to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Scarlet Raiders got two runs back in the top of the third but the Sagehens scored in four consecutive innings to start the game with one run in the third from an Andrew Phillips sacrifice fly and three more in the fourth with RBI's from Hanley and Jake Patterson-Kohout to push the lead to 11-3.
The Sagehen bullpen was solid in today's outing as Luka Green came in to relieve Super and got himself out of a bases loaded jam going 2.2 innings without surrendering a run. Ethan Baer and Connor Woods came on late to secure the win for the Sagehens as they kept the Scarlet Raiders' offense quiet to hand the Sagehens the non-conference win.
