CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team had its win streak snapped with a double header loss to Vassar College 8-6 and Endicott College 5-1 on Tuesday morning at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 13-6 overall and remain at 5-1 in conference play.
Vassar College 8, Pomona-Pitzer 6
The Sagehens were led by Nolan McCafferty who went 3-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored in the loss.
The Brewers got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third with an RBI single up the middle that brought home two runners to take an early 2-0 lead. The Sagehens cut the lead in half in their next at-bats as Jack Hanley doubled down the left field line to bring in McCafferty to cut the lead to 2-1.
Vassar added one more to their total in the fifth with an RBI single to left field to push the lead back up to two runs at 3-1, but the Sagehens had a big inning in the bottom of the fifth with five runs. McCafferty got things going with two RBI's on a double to left followed by a Seth Stone walk with the bases loaded to take their first lead of the game at 4-3. Adam Hinthorne added another run with a single to left field and Michael Hill capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Sagehens a 6-3 lead.
After the Sagehens plated five in the fifth, Vassar came back with a big inning of their own in the top of the sixth as they connected for a grand slam to plate four runs in the inning to retake the lead at 7-6. The Brewers added one more run to their total in the 7th after an RBI single and left the Sagehens facing a two-run deficit with three at-bats remaining.
The Sagehens had a few chances to plate some runs late in the game but the Vassar defense stayed solid to snap the Sagehens' win streak at six games.
Endicott 5, Pomona-Pitzer 1
The Sagehens were led by McCafferty who went 4-5 with one RBI in the loss.
The majority of the action in this game came in the very first at-bats for the Gulls as they quickly jumped ahead with four runs off of four hits in the top of the first. The Gulls added one more run in the top of the fifth with an infield single to second base.
The Sagehens got their only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as McCafferty singled through the left side of the infield to bring in Andrew Phillips to cut the lead down to 5-1.
Pomona-Pitzer had chances to bring in runners against the Gulls as they left 14 runners on base with only one run batted in. The Sagehens had the tying run in the on-deck circle in the ninth but couldn't mount a rally as they fell in both games of their non-conference double header.
