CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team started off with a 13-3 win in seven innings over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field:
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 16-8 overall and 7-3 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Nolan McCafferty who went 4-4 with four RBI's and a run scored in the win while Duncan Skerrett had a career day with six RBI's and went 2-4 with a grand slam. Tyler Yoshihara got he start against the Beavers as he went all seven innings with 10 strikeouts to move to 5-0 on the year.
The Beavers came out and put two early runs up in the first inning after a balk and an RBI single allowed them to play from in front. However, the Sagehens came back with a run in the bottom half of the inning off of an RBI single by McCafferty to cut the lead down to 2-1.
Pomona-Pitzer blew the game wide open in the third after Skerrett plated four runs with one swing of the bat as he belted a grand slam to push the lead to 7-2.
The bats kept getting hotter for the Sagehens as they followed up their four-run inning with five more in the fourth with RBI's from Skerrett, Phillips, Knapp and McCafferty to extend the lead to 12-2.
The Beavers came back to life and notched another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single to left field but the Sagehens brought the lead back up to 10 in the bottom of the sixth as McCafferty capped off his perfect day at the plate with a towering solo shot to left field to put the Sagehens up 13-3.
