PASADENA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team won the season series over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech as they split with the Beavers with a 17-1 win and a 3-2 loss on Saturday afternoon at North Field.
Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens improve to 17-9 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by Bryce Rogan who went 2-3 with three RBI's and three runs scored in the win. Jeremiah Quezada and Adam Hinthorne also notched multi-hit games while Quezada went 2-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored and Hinthorne went 2-4 as well with three RBI's and two runs scored.
Nicholas Radich got the ball in game one and went all seven innings, only allowed one run on five hits and tallied three strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season.
The Sagehens were gifted three runs in the first inning as they scored three without getting a hit in the inning. Pomona-Pitzer then followed up in the second inning with eight runs on four hits to take a commanding 11-0 lead after two innings of play. Quezada got the inning going with an RBI double followed by another RBI double by Rogan. Jack Hanley and Hinthorne added RBI's as well and Brian Knapp capped off the inning with an RBI single.
Pomona-Pitzer scored for the third-straight inning adding four more to their total after Hinthorne doubled home two and Duncan Skerrett homered for the second-straight game with a two-run homer to right to extend the lead to 15-0.
Quezada and Rogan kept the RBI's going in the fourth with an RBI sacrifice fly from Quezada and a solo shot off of the bat of Rogan to cap the scoring in game one for the Sagehens at 17. The Beavers avoided the shutout with one run in the seventh but the Sagehens held on for the lopsided victory.
The Sagehens got on the scoreboard first in game two as McCafferty brought home Skerrett on a sacrifice fly to give the Sagehens and early 1-0 lead. McCafferty struck again for the Sagehens in the fifth as he singled home Skrerrett to extend the lead to 2-0.
Caltech cut the lead in half in the fifth as an RBI triple brought the lead down to just one run at 2-1. The Beavers took over the lead in the eighth as they plated a run on a wild pitch and then an RBI single later in the inning gave the Beavers a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth.
The Sagehens got the lead off runner aboard with a walk and then into scoring positon after a sacrifice bunt but failed to bring in the tying run as the Sagehens fell in game two to the Beavers.
