Baseball: Sagehens Fall In Game One Of SCIAC Tournament

LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell to La Verne 24-14 in the opening round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament on Friday afternoon at Ben Hines Field.

The Sagehens were led by Jeremy Jess who went 3-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Nolan McCafferty and Adam Hinthorne also turned out three-hit games as they each went 3-5 in the loss.

A wild game in the opening round of the SCIAC Tournament that saw 38 combined runs and 41 combined hits.

After each team scored two runs in their first at-bats, La Verne took over the lead with two more in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. The Leopards continued to build their lead as they added two more in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 10-2.

Pomona-Pitzer came roaring back with seven runs in the top of the sixth off of five hits and one error to cut the lead down to just one run at 10-9. After surrendering seven runs in the top of the sixth, the Leopards came back with 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 20-9 lead.

The Sagehens battled back as they came up with five runs in the final three innings of play but the lead was too much to overcome as the Sagehens fell in game one of the SCIAC Tournament.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next take on Chapman on Saturday, May 5th at 8:30 a.m. with the winner advancing to play later in the day.
