CLAREMONT, CA. – Friday afternoon provided plenty of suspense for the Pomona-Pitzer Baseball Team as they edged out the University of La Verne Leopards 12-10. The Sagehens' offense was on full display, collecting 18 hits while Jeremy Jess and Jack Hanley co-led with three RBIs each. Luka Green earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings of relief, striking out five batters to end the game.
Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 5-1 record overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC.
With the Sagehens trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, Jack Hanley took advantage of a one-out bases-loaded opportunity by belting a base-clearing double down the left field line to put the Sagehens up 3-2. Later in the bottom of the third, Jeremy Jess laced a single with runners on first and second to add on more runs and Jeremiah Quezada added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.
The Leopards later came within one after scoring two in the fourth inning, but the Sagehens responded back as Kevin Lo crushed a triple to left field and Brian Knapp followed with an RBI single to make it 7-4. Later in the bottom of the fifth, Jack Damelio hit a two-out RBI single for more insurance.
Trailing 10-5, the Leopards strung a big rally in the seventh inning to tie the game. However, with two outs and runners on second and third, Knapp hit a shallow grounder to second and outran the throw for the RBI single. Nolan Mcafferty followed with a deep RBI double to give the Sagehens a 12-10 lead. Luka Green retired the next six of seven batters to preserve the lead and secure the victory.
Up Next: The Sagehens will complete their series with La Verne on Sunday, March 3 with the times to be determined.
