CLAREMONT, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team fell in a doubleheader to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Redlands 8-5 and 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at The Yard.
Season Impact: with the losses, the Sagehens fall to 14-9 overall and 4-8 in SCIAC play.
Redlands 8, Pomona-Pitzer 5
The Sagehens opened up the game with two runs in the top of the first after Jess singled home a run followed by sophomore Jake Patterson-Kohout who brought in Stone on a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs came back and took the lead with one swing of the bat after a three-run homer put Redlands on top 3-2. Jess responded with a solo shot in the top of the third to tie the game at 3-3 and the Sagehens retook the lead in the top of the firth after junior Jeremiah Quezada brought in junior Nolan McCafferty on a fielder's choice to take a 4-3 lead.
Redlands came back once again as they notched one run in the fifth and then two runs in the sixth to hold a 6-4 lead after six innings of play.
Pomona-Pitzer cut the lead down to one run after Jess notched an RBI single in the seventh but Redlands added two more insurance runs in the seventh inning to build its lead to 8-5 and held on for the win in game one.
Redlands 4, Pomona-Pitzer 3
A quiet start to game two between the Bulldogs and the Sagehens with no runs in the first four innings of play. Redlands eventually got the scoring going with two runs in the bottom of the fifth after back-to-back RBI singles take them a 2-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer got on the board in the top of the seventh after a sacrifice fly by sophomore Michael Hill to cut the lead down to one run at 2-1, but Redlands added another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Sagehens mounted a comeback in the top of the ninth as sophomore Kyle Freeman started off the inning with a solo shot to right field to cut the lead down to one run at 3-2. The Sagehens then strung together a two-out rally that ended with first-year Jack Damelio bringing home the tying run on an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3.
The Sagehens would go on to lose their comeback bid in the bottom of the ninth after getting the first two outs of the inning, a triple to right field put the winning run on third base and then a wild pitched walked off the game for the Bulldogs as they earned the sweep over Pomona-Pitzer.
