MCMINNVILLE, OR. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team opened up their four-game series with a 6-4 win over non-conference opponent Linfield on Friday afternoon at Roy Helser Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 18-18 overall.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Kyle Freeman who went 2-4 in the win with two RBIs and one run scored. First-year Joe Williams earned the win for the Sagehens as he went six innings with six hits, four runs and five strikeouts.
Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first after junior Nolan McCafferty brought home sophomore Seth Stone on a groundball and sophomore Hunter Hennigh singled up the middle to bring in first-year Jack Damelio to start with a two-run advantage. The Sagehens added one more in the third after MCafferty singled home Damelio to extend the lead to 3-0.
Linfield responded in the bottom half of the third to tie the game at 3-3 after a bases loaded walk and a two-RBI single, but Freeman broke the tie in the fourth with a two-run homer to reclaim the lead at 5-3.
The Wildcats cut the lead in half with one run in the sixth after an RBI single but the Sagehens added an insurance run in the seventh on a passed ball to take a 6-4 lead. The Wildcats brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but junior Luka Green stayed strong on the hill in the ninth to pick up the save and secure the win for the Sagehens.
