Sweeney Named First-Team Preseason All-American

Claremont, Calif. - Senior running back Luke Sweeney (Broken Arrow, Okla.) was named a first-team Preseason All-American by USA College Football, it was announced today.

Sweeney earned the accolade following a spectacular junior season in which he led all of Division III in rushing at 177.4 yards per game (second in the NCAA among all divisions). He set a school record with 1,419 yards on the year, despite missing one game with an injury.

In addition to his single-season mark, Sweeney also recorded four of the top 10 single-game rushing totals in Pomona-Pitzer annals, including a program-record 265 against Occidental. He also had 246 yards in a road game against Whittier, which ranks third all-time. Including the 220 yards he had against Occidental as a sophomore, Sweeney now has five of the top 10 single-game rushing totals in Sagehen history.

Sweeney enters the new season with 2,319 career rushing yards, already ranking him fourth in Pomona-Pitzer annals. He needs only 448 yards to match the Sagehens record of 2,767, set by Jim Regan from 1995-98.

Pomona-Pitzer Football opens its 2012 season at home on Saturday, Sept. 8, when it takes on Menlo College at Merritt Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
