WHITTIER, Ca. – Head Coach John Walsh earned his first career Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win as the Pomona-Pitzer Football team defeated Whittier College 45-23 on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in SCIAC play this season.
The Sagehens were led by Karter Odermann who threw for a career-high four touchdowns through the air with 85 yards. Edward Sias split snaps with Odermann at quarterback as he went 12-15 for 214 yards. Aseal Birir led the running backs with 154 yards and also led all receivers with 112 yards and two more touchdowns bringing his total to four on the afternoon.
The Sagehen defense had a nice day as they gave up the fewest amount of points all season long at 23. Blake Gunn led the defense with eight total tackles while Evan Lloyd, Peter Labarbera and Eric Smith each had seven. Pomona-Pitzer tallied two sacks on the day with Kyle Davis and Justin Hess each recording one.
The Sagehens jumped all over the Poets early on as the Whittier offense could only muster three points in the first half. After punting on a three and out in their first drive, the Sagehens put together a nine-play drive ending with a four-yard touchdown pass from Odermann to Kevin Masini to take a 7-0 lead. Pomona-Pitzer doubled up their lead on their next possession with another touchdown pass, this time to Birir, to take a 14-0 lead with 1:07 left in the first quarter.
The play of the game came on the next Sagehen drive as they scored on three-straight possession when Odermann and Birir hooked for the Sagehens' longest play of the year with a 91-yard touchdown pass to take a 21-0 lead. Each team traded field goals to end the half as the Sagehens went into the locker room with a 24-3 advantage.
Pomona-Pitzer scored first in the second half with a two-yard run by Birir but the Poets rallied back with three-straight scores to trim the lead down to just 31-23 with 8:55 left to go in the fourth.
After cutting the game down to just a one possession game, the Sagehens responded in just two plays as Birir went 71 yards down the heart of the Poets' defense to extend the lead to 38-23 and swung momentum back to the Sagehens.
The Sagehens capped off the afternoon as Masini found his second touchdown of the game from four yards out to put Pomona-Pitzer up 45-23 and put away the Poets for their first SCIAC win of the season.
