LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 34-7 on Saturday night at Ortmayer Stadium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Edward Sias who went 26-41 for 308 yards and one touchdown on the day. Evan Flitz led the backfield with 24 yards on four carries and Win Hunter led the receiving core with 117 yards and one touchdown.
Alex Gold led an impressive defense for the Sagehens with eight total tackles as well as a sack and a forced fumble on the day. Tate Tussing had a day to remember as he tallied one interception that he took 71 yards on the return and also housed a kick return for 96 yards, his first of his career.
The game opened up with three consecutive touchdowns between the two teams. The Sagehens got the ball and struck first as Karter Odermann capped off an 11 play 74-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown to put the Sagehens up 7-0.
La Verne responded on their first offensive drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 7-7 but Tussing killed all momentum with a 96-yard kick return to put the Sagehens back up 14-7.
The second quarter had little action on offense but the Sagehens did tack on another three points as Winston Li drilled a 26-yard field goal to put the Sagehens up 17-7 at the half.
The defense stayed solid in the second half for the Sagehens as they shut down the Leopards' offense for the remainder of the game after the opening drive score.
Pomona-Pitzer punted and then turned the ball over on a fumble in their first two possessions of the half but found the endzone again as Sias connected with Hunter on a 42-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 24-7. Li was able to get the Sagehens three more points as he drilled his second 26-yard field goal of the game to give the Sagehens a 27-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Leopards tried to pass their way back into the game but Tussing came up big with an interception and returned it 71 yards to set up Odermann for a four-yard run to cap off a big win for the Sagehens on the road.
