Football: Sagehens Win Battle For The Drum Over Oxy, 33-0

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 33-0 in the return of the Battle For the Drum on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kemp Stadium.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC this season.

The Sagehens were led by senior Edward Sias who threw for 102 yards on 5-6 passing and one touchdown. Junior Karter Odermann threw for 85 yards with one touchdown and rushed for 28 yards on five carries. Freshman Dominick Norris led the Sagehens in the backfield with 69 yards and one touchdown while senior David Berkinsky caught five balls for 84 yards and one touchdown.

The defense had a game to remember as they shutout a team for the first time this season. Sophomore Nick Pacult led the team with seven tackles while the Sagehens' secondary came up big again as senior Eric Smith came away with a fumble recovery and sophomore Tate Tussing and freshman Vaishnav Siddapureddy coming away with interceptions.

The Sagehens dominated play against the Tigers as Pomona-Pitzer tallied nearly 400 yards of total offense with Occidental only coming away with 181. Pomona-Pitzer got the offense going early on against the Tigers with 21 points to open up the first quarter. Senior Joseph Ha capped off an 11-play drive with a one-yard touchdown pass from Odermann to get the Sagehens up 7-0.

After an interception, Pomona-Pitzer added a second touchdown late in the first with Berkinsky catching an eight yard pass from sophomore Nick Kapule to extend the lead to 14-0. Oxy turned the ball over on its second-straight possession to give the Sagehens the ball back with great field position. Pomona-Pitzer was able to punch in their third touchdown of the quarter with Norris running in a score from two yards out to push the lead to 21-0 at the end of the quarter.

The Sagehens came out in the second quarter and picked up right where they left off. Ha ran in his second touchdown of the day from one yard out to put the Sagehens up 27-0 and Will Radice capped off the day for the Sagehens with a 33-yard pass from Sias to seal the game and give the Sagehens a 33-0 lead before half.

Neither team came out with any points in the second half but the Sagehens did enough damage in the first two quarters to hold on for the road win.
