CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Opponent Caltech 74-66 on the Sagehens' senior day at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Before the start of the game, Pomona-Pitzer honored its three seniors that would be playing in their final game as a Sagehen. The senior class of Gibson Farone-Collins, Isaac Levy-Rubinett and Reid Callan were honored for all that they have done over the past four years.
Farone-Collins led the Sagehens in his final game with 16 points and eight rebounds. Also in double-digits was freshman Corbin Koch who came off the bench with 15 and freshman Daniel Rosenbaum who collected 14 points.
Kc Emezie led the Beavers with a game-high 21 points in the loss for Caltech.
Defense was the story of the first half as neither team could register much offensive throughout the beginning of the game.
The Beavers only shot 28% in the first half of play with the Sagehens shooting only 32%. Neither team had much luck from beyond the arc as Pomona-Pitzer connected on just two of its 11 attempts and Caltech only hitting two of its ten tries from three.
After Hunter Lowry hit a big three-point shot to tie the game at 25-25 with 3:00 remaining, the Sagehens went on a 10-2 run to close out the half and took a 32-27 lead going into the break.
The offense clicked in the second half for the Sagehens as they shot over 46% from the field and 56% from beyond the arc.
Pomona-Pitzer took a double-digit lead with 14:41 left in the second half as Farone-Collins hit a jumper to extend the lead to 40-30.
Caltech slowly began to chip away at the lead as they found themselves only down 57-53 with 6:02 left after a pair or Brent Cahill free throws.
Pomona-Pitzer stayed solid from the line late in the game as they connected on six-straight free throws to end the game and held off Caltech to take their seventh SCIAC win of the season.
The Sagehens end their season with a 7-9 SCIAC record and went an even 12-12 overall.
