CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Puget Sound 80-64 on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 3-5 overall with three of their five losses against Division I and Division II opponents. Puget Sound drops to 6-3 overall with the loss.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Corbin Koch who had a game-high 19 points and seven rebounds in the win. Also in double digits was sophomore Daniel Rosenbaum with 13 points and freshman Micah Elan with 11 points and six assists.
The Loggers were led by Jimmy Wohrer who tallied a team-high 14 points while Timmy Saunders came off the bench with 13.
Pomona-Pitzer stayed on top for the majority of the first half as the lead only changed hands twice with the Sagehens holding the lead for the last 17:30 of the half.
The Sagehens held a slight 17-15 lead with 9:54 remaining but went on a 22-7 run to close out the half and led 39-22 heading into the locker room.
The Sagehens were able to hold the Loggers to just 25% from three-point range in the first half while shooting 40% themselves.
The Loggers came out in the second half and turned up their aggression on defense. Unfortunately for them, it resulted in seven team fouls in the first 4:20 of the half.
Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead to its largest gap of the game at 28 with 9:59 remaining but the Loggers showed life late as they found their stroke from beyond the arc to cut the lead down to 75-60 with 1:29 remaining. The Loggers attempted comeback was held off by the Sagehens as they claimed their third win of the season.
The Sagehen defense packed the paint as the Loggers continued to struggle from beyond the three-point line. Puget Sound ended the night shooting 35.8% from the field and only 27.6% from three-point territory.
Pomona-Pitzer's offense shot an even 50% from the field and 52.9% from beyond the arc in what was their most impressive win of the season thus far.
