THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental 68-59 on Thursday night at Rush Gym.
Season impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 14-9 overall and 10-4 in SCIAC play while Occidental drops to 13-10 overall and 5-9 in conference play this season.
The Sagehens were led by sophomore Corbin Koch who had a game-high 24 points to go along with six rebounds as he went 8-11 from the floor and 6-8 from beyond the arc. Freshman Micah Elan tallied 13 points while sophomore Daniel Rosenbaum and junior Jack Gale chipped in with eight each.
The Tigers were led by Jay Miller and Zach Baines who shared a team-high 17 points while Andrew Johnson tallied a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Sagehens and Tigers played in a tightly contested first half as neither team held more than a seven-point lead. Occidental jumped on top early and stayed on top throughout the majority of the first half until the Sagehens took their first lead of the game at 32-30 after a Gale three pointer with 2:45 left in the half.
Pomona-Pitzer ended the first half on a 14-7 run as the Sagehens went into the locker room with a three-point lead at 40-37.
The second half was in the Sagehens favor as they never trailed throughout the duration of the half. The Tigers stayed within striking distance and eventually tied the Sagehens at 48-48 with 10:23 remaining.
Pomona-Pitzer found their offense late in the game and eventually sparked an 11-2 run to take a 61-54 lead with just 1:47 left to go.
The late run was enough to hold off the Tigers and lift the Sagehens to their fourth-straight win of the season.
