Men's Basketball: Sagehens Fall Late To Tufts At Home, 77-75

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team fell to non-conference opponent Tufts University 77-75 on Thursday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 2-9 overall and remain at 0-2 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by junior Daniel Rosenbaum who tallied a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Junior Corbin Koch also had his second-straight 20-point game as he finished with 21 points in the loss and sophomore Micah Elan chipped in with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Sagehens came out of the gate on fire from the field as they connected on five of their first six shots of the half to take an 11-0 lead before Tufts was forced to burn a timeout just three minutes into the game. On the other side of the ball, the Sagehens forced the Jumbos to miss their first four shots of the game before they connected on a made jump shot after the timeout.

The Sagehens maintained their early lead over the Jumbos until Tufts made a run midway through the first half capped off by a KJ Garrett dunk to even the score at 19-19 with 10:47 left on the clock. Although the Jumbos erased their early first half deficit, the Sagehens never gave up the lead as they responded with a 9-2 run to take a 28-21 lead.

Tufts made another run late in the first half and cut the lead down to one point at 42-41 after a Garrett made layup but the Sagehens hit a late free-throw to cling to a two-point halftime lead at 43-41 thanks to big first halves by Rosenbaum and Koch who ended the half with 14 points and 11 points, respectively.

The second half was a tightly played contest as neither team held a lead of more than four points. The Sagehens held on to the lead for the majority of the second half until Tufts took over their first lead of the game after a Garrett layup made it 54-52 with 13:03 left in the game.

Pomona-Pitzer immediately tied the game and took back the lead after a made Koch layup at 56-54 and the Sagehens were able to hold off the Jumbos until they tied the game on a pair of made free-throws at 75-75 with just 40 seconds remaining.

After a timeout by the Sagehens, Tufts came up with a big turnover and drew a foul with a chance to take the lead at the line. The Jumbos converted on both of their free-throws and took a 77-75 lead with the Sagehens inbounding with just three seconds left to go.

Pomona-Pitzer set up a play off of the inbound and found an open three with a chance to win it but the ball banked off of the back rim as the Sagehens fell in yet another close game this season.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next continue SCIAC play as they host Redlands on Monday, January 1st at 7:00 p.m.
