Men's Soccer: Sagehens Fall To No. 15 Redlands In 5-3 Shootout

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team fell on the road to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent No. 15 Redlands 5-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Pomona-Pitzer moves to 5-5 on the year and 4-4 in conference play while Redlands improves to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the SCIAC this season.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Chase Boone found the back of the net in the 6th minute on a header from a pass by Spencer Scott.

The Sagehens responded as senior JK Gopakumar got into the box and banked in a low shot off of the left post to tie the game at 1-1 in the 12th minute.

Redlands came back to reclaim the lead just before halftime as Antony Chonga took a pass from Jesus Avalos and snuck  it past the Pomona-Pitzer goal keeper to take a 2-1 lead.

After trailing at the half, the Sagehens came back and evened up the score at 2-2 in the 58th minute as senior Voja Maric found the back of the net off of a pass from sophomore Bjorn Sigurdsson.

Redlands went on to score two quick goals by Casey ChubbFertal as he scored a diving header off of a corner kick at 68:19 and chipped in another goal at 69:30 to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead.

Pomona-Pitzer responded with a goal just two minutes later as senior Chase Abelson blasted in a loose ball from the top of the box to cut the deficit back down to one goal at 4-3.

The Bulldogs would tack on one more goal as Chase Boone headed in a goal off of a pass from Jesus Avalos in the 78th minute to extend their lead to 5-3.

The Sagehens next travel to SCIAC opponent La Verne on Wednesday, October 5th at 7:00 p.m.
