La Verne, Calif. – Voja Maric scored his SCIAC-leading eighth goal and the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team recorded their first shutout of the season on their way to a 3-0 win against the third place La Verne Leopards Wednesday night.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens move into a tie for fourth place in the SCIAC with Occidental. They improve 5-4 in SCIAC play and 6-5 overall.
The Leopards fall to 5-3-1 in the SCIAC and 7-3-1 overall. They are currently in third place in the conference.
The Sagehens caught a break 26 minutes into the game, when the Leopards defense scored an own goal while trying to deflect a cross from Chase Abelson, giving Pomona-Pitzer the first lead of the game.
Pomona-Pitzer extended their lead midway through the second half when Bjorn Sigurdsson set up for a corner kick and found Shanti Dubey on the far side. Dubey out jumped the defender and headed the ball in for a 2-0 lead.
Voja Maric provided the dagger with five minutes left in the match, capitalizing off a counterattack, gathering a pass from Jacob Merkle, and beating the keeper to seal the game at 3-0. Maric has scored a goal in the Sagehens' last four games and is tied for first in the SCIAC with 17 points.
Pomona-Pitzer have found an offensive rhythm recently, scoring a combined 10 goals in their last three games.
Ben Mitchell recorded three saves in the shutout. Mitchell ranks second in the conference with 58 saves.
Next Game: The Sagehens head to Pasadena this Saturday for an 11 a.m. game against the Caltech Beavers.
