CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Caltech 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Pomona-Pitzer Soccer Field.
Season Impact: The Sagehens earned their first SCIAC win of the season against the Beavers and improve to 2-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in SCIAC play while the beavers drop to 1-4 overall and 0-2 to start conference play this season
The Sagehens were led by senior Peter Rentzepis who tallied his first multi-goal game of the season with two goals in the win. Seniors Jacob Merkle and Ethan Flor each added one goal as well to the total. Senior goalkeeper Ben Mitchell posted his second shutout of the season to earn his second win of the year.
Pomona-Pitzer dominated possession of the ball against the Beavers and attacked early and often as they put up 13 shots in the first half and 11 shots in the second.
The Sagehens had chances early on in the first half but the Caltech defense was able to hold off the Sagehens' attack until the 38th minute when Rentzepis scored his first goal of the afternoon to give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead.
The Beavers were able to control the damage for the rest of the half and went into halftime with just a 1-0 deficit.
The rest of the goals came for the Sagehens in the second half as Merkle got the Sagehens back on the board in the 60th minute and Rentzepis added his second in the 63rd off of a cross from Daven Crossland to go up 3-0 over the Beavers.
The final goal of the afternoon came off of the head of Flor after a nice cross from Peter Heckendorn found the head of Flor and he put it past the Caltech keeper to put the Sagehens up 4-0 as they cruised to a conference win over the Beavers.
