#30 Pomona-Pitzer Defeats #19 Mary Washington

*The ITA National Rankings have just been released, and the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis Team is currently ranked 21 in the nation.*

For the first time in program history, the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis Team defeated the 19th ranked Mary Washington Eagles, 6-3.

The 30th ranked Sagehens entered the match 3-2 (3-1 in NCAA division III), having recently lost 6-3 to #28 Cal Lutheran. The Hens jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles portion of the match. The number two team of Tommy Meyer and Alex Groth were first on the board with an 8-4 win. The number one doubles team of Uday Singh and Frankie Allinson gave the Hens a 2-0 lead with an identical 8-4 win. Grant Friedman and Max Sabel put an exclamation point on the doubles sweep with their 9-7 win at numbner three doubles.

In the singles, the Hens jumped out to quick leads at numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 singles, grabbing the first sets in each of those matches. Sophomore Tommy Meyer gave Pomona-Pitzer their fourth point with his 6-2, 6-4 win at number one singles. Sophomore Uday Singh clinched the win for the Hens with his 6-3, 6-1 win at number two singles. At the three spot, freshman Frankie Allinson was up a set and a break before his opponent rallied, forcing a third set. Sophomore Alex Groth grabbed a quick one-set lead before succombing in the second and third sets. At six singles, sophomore Ramsey Bernard was unable to find his rhythm and fell, 6-2, 6-2. Meanwhile, freshman Max Sabel rallied after losing the first set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the second before winning it in a tiebreaker (7-1). Allinson again jumped out to a strong lead, 4-1 in the third set, hanging on for a hard-earned 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 win at three singles. Sabel missed a few opportunities, and his opponent played a solid third set, as the freshman fell, 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-4.

The ITA will be publishing updated national rankings on Tuesday, March 2.

On Saturday, March 6, the Sagehens will be home facing regional opponent Chapman University at 2 pm.
