Sagehens Head To SCIAC Championships This Weekend

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team travels to Redlands on Friday and Saturday for the 2012 SCIAC Championships.

The Sagehens will be the third seed in the seven-team tournament and will open on Friday morning against sixth-seeded Occidental at 9:30 a.m. The winner of that match will return to the courts on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. to face the winner of second-seeded Cal Lutheran and seventh-seeded Caltech.

The other first-round contest on Friday morning features fourth-seeded Redlands against fifth-seeded Whittier, with the winner of that one meeting top-seeded CMS in the Friday afternoon semifinals.

The final round, including the championship between the two semifinal winners, will take place on Saturday at 10 a.m. (third place and fifth place matches will also be held simultaneously).

The SCIAC Championship will be one of the most competitive in the country with three teams placing in the top 11 nationally in the most recent ITA rankings, including No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer. Cal Lutheran is ranked fifth, while CMS is sixth (new rankings are scheduled to come out today).

Pomona-Pitzer will look to senior Tommy Meyer (Bernville, Pa.) and sophomore Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) in the top two singles positions, while juniors Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Ore.) and Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) will be the top doubles team.

Meyer is ranked No. 20 nationally in singles and has four wins over opponents ranked in the top 10 this season. Wiechert had a midseason stretch of 13 straight singles wins, with 12 of the opponents coming from nationally ranked teams (including No. 1 Amherst). Sabel and Allinson moved up to No. 1 doubles midway through the season and were quartfinalists at the Ojai Valley Tournament last weekend.
