Men's Tennis Drops Season Opener To No. 15 Bates

Claremont, Calif. - The No. 10 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team opened the 2013 season with a 6-3 loss to No. 15 Bates on Thursday evening.

Freshman Thomas Low (Charlotte, N.C.) won at both singles and doubles in his first collegiate match for the Sagehens, earning a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles and teaming with sophomore Connor Hudson (Denver, Colo.) for an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Kevin Prescott (Chicago, Ill. - pictured) provided the other point for Pomona-Pitzer with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

However, the Sagehens missed out on several other close battles. Junior Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) got off to a great start at No. 1 singles with a 6-1 win in the first set, but dropped the second 6-3 and fell to Robert Crampton in a third-set tiebreaker 7-4 (although the team match was already decided at that point).

Frankie Allinson (Waco, Texas) had a narrow 8-6 loss at No. 1 doubles with fellow senior Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho) and fell 8-6 in the first set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles to Pierre Planche, before Planche took the second set 6-1. Hudson dropped the first set at No. 3 singles to Timmy Berg, bounced back to win the second 6-2, but Berg regrouped to win the decisive third set 6-2, which gave Bates its fifth point and sealed the match.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on March 6 for a home match against Mary Washington.
