Sagehens Have Three Named All-SCIAC

Claremont, Calif. - Senior Max Sabel (Sun Valley, Idaho) and junior Chris Wiechert (Eugene, Ore.) were named first-team All-SCIAC and sophomore Connor Hudson (Golden, Colo.) was named to the second team, it was announced this week by the conference office.

Wiechert was named first-team All-SCIAC for the second year in a row, while Sabel moved up to the first team after earning a second-team selection last fall.

The Sagehens played a difficult schedule, finishing 11-14 on the year, with 19 of their 25 opponents earning a spot in the national rankings.

Wiechert started the season slowly while batting a painful wrist injury that prevented him from hitting his normal backhand. He started out with seven straight losses, before winning a big individual match at No. 1 singles against third-ranked Williams. He returned to his old form in time for the postseason, playing at No. 2 singles, winning two of three SCIAC Tournament matches against nationally ranked Whittier and Redlands (both 5-4 victories), and falling 7-6, 7-6 to No. 1 CMS.

Sabel stepped into the No. 1 spot in singles in the second half of the season, and provided some key wins, including a comeback win against Whittier in the SCIAC quarterfinals (a 5-4 Pomona-Pitzer victory). He will also be competing at the NCAA Division III National Doubles Championships from May 23-25 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, along with classmate Frankie Allinson (McGregor, Texas), after the duo ended the year with seven straight duals wins.

Hudson played at No. 3 singles in the Pomona-Pitzer line-up almost the entire season (except for three matches at No. 2), and also earned some big wins, including singles victories against No. 3 Williams and No. 5 Bowdoin. He also went 14-8 in doubles after being paired with classmate Connor Sutton (Overland Park, Kansas).
