Claremont, Calif. - The No. 13 Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team took 3-0 leads after doubles in both matches as it went on to defeat No. 18 Cal Lutheran 7-2 and Occidental 9-0 on Saturday in a SCIAC doubleheader at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
With the sweep, the Sagehens move to 13-6 overall on the year and 5-1 in the SCIAC. Cal Lutheran falls to 5-9 overall and 4-2 in the SCIAC, while Occidental slips to 3-16 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
In the Cal Lutheran match, Connor Hudson and Graham Maassen cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, but the other two matches were tight. Jonathan Kim and Sam Crawford were able to take the final two games for a 9-7 win at No. 2, while Chris Wiechert and Anthony Bello rallied back in a tiebreaker for a 9-8 (7-5) win at No. 1 to complete the sweep and give Pomona-Pitzer a 3-0 lead.
Josh Kim rolled to a quick singles win to put Pomona-Pitzer up 4-0, winning 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6. However, it took a while for the Sagehens to get the clinching point, as Jonathan Kim was able to get the final two games for a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5, making the score 5-1.
Jake Yasgoor (pictured) took the first of his two singles matches of the day with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 2, while Graham Maassen earned a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 4 for the other Pomona-Pitzer point.
Yasgoor moved up to No. 1 singles in the Occidental match and picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win, while Hudson won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Kevin Wei and Spencer Simonides won at No. 3 doubles and then won their singles matches at No. 5 and No. 6 as well. Michael Chang played at No. 3 for the Sagehens and Bello played at No. 4 to complete the singles sweep.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday when it hosts Whittier in its final regular season match of the year, beginning at 2 p.m.
