Men's Tennis: Sagehens Set To Begin 2016 Spring Season

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team will open their spring season on Saturday, January 30th against Occidental at 10 a.m. and Azusa Pacific at 3 p.m.

The Sagehens finished last season going 17-8 overall and went 7-2 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Pomona-Pitzer fell in the SCIAC Championship to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals where the Sagehens also fell to the Stags.

Pomona-Pitzer returns 12 players from last season and includes three seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and welcomes in three new freshmen.

Sophomore Kalyan Chadalavada was named a 2015 All-American for doubles as he played No. 1 doubles all season for the Sagehens. Chadalavada posted a 6-2 record in singles play and won the ITA Doubles West Regional Championship in the fall.

Junior Jake Yasgoor returns for the 2016 season after missing the end of the 2015 season with an injury. Yasoor had a 13-4 record in singles and a 15-3 record in doubles before being lost for the season. Yasgoor was named First-Team All-SCIAC and played mostly at the No.2 slot and will look to have a productive 2016 campaign for the Sagehens.

Junior Graham Maassen is coming off of a Second-Team All-SCIAC season where he played mostly at the No. 3 and No. 4 slot for singles. He had an 18-2 record in doubles and finished the year with a 12-14 record in singles.

Senior Jonathan Kim was a regular in the lineup for both singles and doubles competition.  Kim finished the 2015 season and named to the Second-Team All-SCIAC.  Kim went 26-6 in doubles competition last season and posted a 12-12 record in singles. Kim won 13 straight doubles matches in duals before falling in the NCAA Regional Finals to No. 1 CMS.

Junior Antony Bello was a SCIAC All-Academic selection and named to the ITA Scholar Athlete Team in 2015. He played in the No. 3 slot for doubles and played singles for the second half of the season at the No. 4 slot. Bello posted a 15-9 record for doubles and a 7-3 mark in singles.

Junior Spencer Simonides was named SCIAC All-Academic and and ITA Scholar-Athlete selection. He was a regular at No. 3 doubles and saw part-time action in the singles lineup as well. Simonides compiled a 24-5 record in doubles and a 10-6 mark in singles. He started out the year 12-0 in doubles, including wins over No. 2 CMS and No. 1 Amherst.

The Sagehens have a young but experienced lineup and will rely on some underclassmen to help carry the load for the 2016 season.

Seniors Sam Crawford and Thomas Low and junior Josh Kim will provide some much needed depth to the Sagehen lineup.

Sophomores Sam Malech, Marko Mandic and Blake Myrin will see some time on the court as well and help Pomona-Pitzer in 2016.

Freshman Spencer Chiu, Josh Gearou and Sam Gearou will look to show off their skills as the new men in and add some new young talent to the Pomona-Pitzer tennis team.

The Sagehens will get two home matches in before heading east to the ITA National Indoors at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.
