EAGLE ROCK, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's and Women's Track and Field teams will begin their 2017 regular season schedules with the Battle for the Banner against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Occidental on Saturday afternoon.
This will be the seventh meet of the Battle for the Banner between the two schools with the first meet held in 2010. The school with the highest combined point total for both men and women's scores is declared the winner. The current record between the two schools is 3-3 with Pomona-Pitzer winning three out of the last four meets. However, the Tigers ended up on top last season with a combined score of 141-128.
The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Track and Field team returns after finishing in third place in the SCIAC Championships last season are were picked to take third place this season in the recent SCIAC Coaches' Preseason Poll.
The Sagehens have five athletes returning from a season ago that earned All-West honors last season in senior Parker Head, senior J.D. Kieffer, senior Paul Messana and sophomore Christopher Neikirk as well as All-American junior Calvin Aylward in Javelin.
The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Track and Field team comes back after a fourth place finish in the SCIAC Championships last season and were also picked to finish in fourth place this season in the SCIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Pomona-Pitzer gets back three All-West athletes from a season ago in senior Cat Banobi, senior Maya Weigel and senior Kaile Sauro.
Weigel comes back after a historic 2016 where she took All-American honors in two events with a second place finish in the 1500 meter run and third place in the 5000 meter run. She will look to improve this season as she has her eye on a National Championship in potentially two events for the Sagehens this year.
Weigel will also compete this weekend in a NCAA Qualifier in Seattle, Washington as she will look to qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championships in the mile race at 2:00 p.m.
The Sagehens will compete at Occidental College at Bill Henry Track with field events beginning at 11:00 a.m. and the running events will begin at 12:00 p.m.
