Men's Track and Field: Sagehens Finish Regular Season with Impressive Meet

CLAREMONT, CA — The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Track and Field team earned three team wins and set some of the best marks in the nation in the final SCIAC Multi-Dual meet.

The Sagehens were led by the 4x400 meter relay team that won the race with the seventh fastest time in the nation. Cal Neikirk, Nick Vucovich, Ryan Abele, and Paul Messana combined to finish with a time of 3:17.21, also placing them seventh on the Sagehens' All-Time list in the event.

Messana scored a win for the Sagehens in the 400 meter, crossing the line at 48.30. The senior's time is the fifth best time in program history and the eighth fastest in NCAA Division III this season. 

The Sagehens took the top three spots in the 800 meter. Danny Rosen won the event with a time of 1:56.52. Gabe Elliott took second at 1:57.16, and Nicholas Borowsky came in third at 1:58.43. 

Charlie Watson earned a win for the Sagehens in the 5000 meter with a time of 15:24.22.

Neikirk added another pair of wins to his impressive sophomore season. He won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.70, the fourth fastest time in program history and tenth best time in the nation. In the 400 meter hurdles, he won with a time of 54.17. His time is the 13th fastest time in Division III. Parker Head took fourth in 400 meter hurdles at 1:00.18.

In the field events, Neikirk finished second in the high jump with a height of 6-00.75, and second in the triple jump with a distance of 44-00.75.

Calvin Aylward won the javelin with a throw of 206-09. The junior currently holds the fifth best throw in the country with a mark of 211-09. Nathan Gallatin took fifth in the event at 141-01.

Lucas White Moon turned in a third place finish in both the long jump and triple jump. In the long jump he finished with a mark of 20-01.50, and he finished with a mark of 43-00.25 in the triple jump. 

Niko Tutland came away with a win in the steeplechase for Pomona-Pitzer. The senior finished with a time of 9:58.61. Sophomore Carter Stripp took fourth at 10:43.53.

The Sagehens earned a second place finish in the 4x100 meter relay. Neil Chan, Neikirk, Abele, and Faraaz Rashidi finished with a time of 42.71, just behind the winning La Verne team that crossed the line at 42.58.

Abele and Rashidi took second and third respectively in the 100 meter dash in an incredibly close finish between the two. Abele took second at 11.245, and Rashidi took third at 11.249.

The pair finished in the same order in the 200 meter. Abele took second at 22.43 and Rashidi finished third at 22.69.

Julian DeGroot-Lutzner led the Sagehens in the 1500 meter. The sophomore finished second with a time of 3:59.27. Right behind him in third place was teammate Kellen Browning (3:59.80). Peter Davis finished the event in fourth with a time of 4:04.08.

Senior Reggie Reed finished second in the discus with a throw of 143-10. He also finished fourth in shot put with a throw of 44-03.25, and fourth in the javelin with a personal best of 157-08.

Senior Day: The Sagehens honored seniors Adam Hathaway, Parker Head, J.D. Kieffer, Paul Messana, Reggie Reed, Niko Tutland, and Charlie Watson in a ceremony before the meet.

Next Meet: The Sagehens compete next at the SCIAC Championships running from April 28-29 at Strehle Track. The meet is set to begin on Friday at 2 p.m.
