CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team fell in both games to Whitworth by the scores of 3-0 and 7-3 at Wig Beach Field on Saturday afternoon.
Game one was a pitchers' duel as both teams went scoreless through the first three innings. Liz Rodarte went 4.1 innings and only gave up two runs on four hits. Madi Perez went all seven innings for the Pirates and only surrendered five hits in her first shutout of the season.
Whitworth scored its first run in the top of the fourth as Shannon Wessel came home on a wild pitch. The Pirates added one more in the top of the fifth on an error and scored their final run of the game in top of the sixth on a bases loaded walk.
The Sagehens couldn't manufacture any key hits as they left seven runners on base as they went scoreless in game one.
Pomona-Pitzer started out behind again in game two of the double header as Whitworth put up the first two runs of the game in the third inning by way of an error and an RBI sacrifice fly that gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead after the third.
The Sagehens went on to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth as Susanne Boden grounded out to bring home Rodarte and Aryana Yee also came around to score after a throwing error by the Whitworth defense.
Pirates went ahead in the seventh as they posted three runs in the inning after a two run RBI double and two RBI singles pushed their lead to 7-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Sagehens threatened in their last at bats as Bianca Cockrell doubled to right field to score Sofia Baig and Rodarte flied out at the warning track as the Pirates survived game two for the sweep against Pomona-Pitzer.
The Sagehens next take the field on Sunday, February 21st as they open up SCIAC play at Occidental at 12 p.m.
