Softball: Sagehens Fall on the Road to Leopards

LA VERENE, CA — The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team dropped two games on the road Friday afternoon against the University of La Verne Leopards.

Game One: La Verne 5, Pomona-Pitzer 1

The Sagehens held even through five and a half innings, but the Leopards rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take game one of the doubleheader.

Michelle Deguzman gave the Leopards the early lead when she hit a RBI double that scored Justice Borden in the bottom of the third.

The Sagehens responded the next half inning when junior designated player Haylee Sindt drove in Liz Rodarte on a single to center field. Rodarte got on base after doubling down the left field line. Freshman Izzy Deatherage moved Rodarte to third when she singled to center.

Pomona-Pitzer finished the game with nine hits including two from Marya Ornelas, Bianca Cockrell, and Sindt. Kristen Hong also added a hit.

Rodarte got the start for the Sagehens in the circle, finishing the game with seven strikeouts.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Leopards scored two runs off a triple and followed it up with two-run home run.

Game Two: La Verne 9, Pomona-Pitzer 3

Freshman pitcher Alondra Reynoso had two RBI, but a big third inning by the Leopards gave them the win in the second game of the doubleheader.

After Liz Rodarte opened the bottom of the fifth with a lead-off single, freshman Izzy Deatherage moved pinch runner Kendal Kipper to second with a single to right field. Two batters later, first baseman Emily Rockhill walked to load the bases.

Thats when Alondra stepped up and singled to left to bring in Kipper and Deatherage. The Sagehens added one more run in the final inning when Kristen Hong drove in pinch runner Rachel Fong.

But that was as close as Pomona-Pitzer would get. The Leopards jumped out to a big lead in the third inning when Sienna Kendricks hit a grand slam to put La Verne up 4-0. The Leopards would add two more runs in the inning.

Marya Ornelas and Bianca Cockrell each added a hit for Pomona-Pitzer. Rockhill walked twice. Ornelas also added a stolen base.

Reynoso got the start for the Sagehens and Cockrell pitched in relief.

Season Impact: The Sagehens drop to 9-23 overall and 5-15 in SCIAC play. The Leopards improve to 21-7 overall and 14-4 in the conference.

Next Game: The Sagehens return home tomorrow to host the Whittier College Poets tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
