Pomona-Pitzer Falls On Road To CMS

Claremont, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Women's Basketball team stretched out a close game in the second half and captured a 60-47 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Thursday evening.

The Athenas improve to 15-9 overall and 9-4 in the SCIAC with the win. With the loss, Pomona-Pitzer slips to 4-20 on the season and 2-11 in the SCIAC.

The Sagehens jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but quickly fell behind 19-8 as CMS seemed poised to take control of the game. However, sophomore guard Emi Hashizume (San Mateo, Calif. - pictured) came off the bench to hit back-to-back three-pointers to key an 8-0 run and get Pomona-Pitzer within 19-16.

The Sagehens hung tough and were within 27-22 in the closing moments of the first half, and missed a three-pointer that would have trimmed the lead to two. However, the Athenas got the defensive rebound and closed out the half with two quick baskets to take a 31-22 lead into the break.

CMS then extended the lead into double figures early in the second half and were able to pull away, building up to as many as 24 points (53-29). Pomona-Pitzer kept fighting, as three-pointers from freshman guard Ruthie Shapiro (Moraga, Calif.), Hashizume, and freshman forward Maria Weyhrauch (Juneau, Alaska) trimmed the lead back down to 12, but Pomona-Pitzer was unable to get it down to single digits.

Hashizume led the way for the Sagehens with 11 points, while senior forward Asha Gipson (San Diego, Calif.) earned a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Shapiro was also in double figures for Pomona-Pitzer with 10 points, while Frannie Hemmelgarn led CMS with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday for its 2011-12 finale, when it hosts Whittier at 5 p.m. It will mark the final collegiate contest for Gipson, who is far and away the team's top rebounder this season (8.8 rpg), fourth in the SCIAC.
