CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier 73-49 on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 1-20 overall and 1-12 in SCIAC play this season while the Poets improve to 7-15 overall and 6-7.
The Sagehens were led by senior Alaina Woo who had a team-high 14 points. Sophomore Anita Romero had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore Keilani Ikehara chipped in with seven points off of the bench.
The Poets were led by Cali Cubel who had a game-high 21 points and five steals. Ana Youngblood had 12 points and nine rebounds and Carly Buechler chipped in with 11 points and five steals.
The Poets came out in the first quarter and quickly built a lead over the Sagehens as they jumped out to a 14-4 lead. Pomona-Pitzer's offense got better as the quarter went on and they cut the Poets' lead down to 17-10 heading into the second quarter.
Neither team shot particularly well from the field in the first half but the Poets forced the Sagehens to turn the ball over 10 times in the first half and commanded the paint outscoring the Sagehens 16-4 down low as Whittier held a 38-17 at halftime.
The Sagehens came out in the third quarter and had their most productive quarter of the game as they managed to outscore the Poets 20-18 to cut the lead down to 56-37 heading into the fourth.
The Whittier lead was too much for the Sagehens to overcome in the fourth as they fell to the Poets at home.
