CLAREMONT, CA. – Wednesday night ended in dramatic fashion for the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team, as senior Anita Romero clinched the victory over Knox College in overtime with a buzzer-beating jumper. With 0.8 seconds left in the game, Kamil English inbounded the ball to Romero who was at the top of the key. Romero, turned around for a fadeaway jumper and got nothing but net to win the game. Romero ended the night with 10 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Kamil English had a career-high 27 points with three steals and four steals. She was also a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
Season Impact: The Sagehens are now 7-3 overall this season after tonight's victory.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the opening quarter, struggling to get the offense going. With the Sagehens ahead 6-5 with 5:31 left in the quarter, the Prairie Fire finally found some spark when Jarrelyn McCall scored a layup. A minute later, Karlie Thorn drilled a three-pointer to extend Knox's lead 10-6, but Cameron Edward responded with a catch-and-shoot off the corner from a pass by Keilani Ikehara to cut the deficit 10-9. Unfortunately, the Prairie Fire went on a 6-0 run to lead 16-9 at the end of the quarter.
The Sagehens were looking for answers to break out of the offensive rut, but the Prairie Fire's defense managed to preserve their lead. Trailing 25-17 with 1:49 left, the Sagehens cut the lead when Ikehara hit a jumper. With 45 seconds remaining, English converted a three-pointer to narrow the lead 27-22, but a last second foul on Morgan Potter of Knox sent her to the line for two free throws. Knox led 29-22 at the half.
The two sides traded baskets in the third quarter, but the Sagehens finally got the spark they were looking for with 3:41 left in the period. Behind 36-28, Renae Tamura swung the ball to English at the top of the perimeter and the first year converted the triple. Tamura then stole the ball on the next possession and English fired another three to cut the lead 36-34. Later with 2:04 left in the period, Knox was charged with a flagrant and English converted two free throws to tie the game. On the next possession, English drew the foul again and made both shots from the charity stripe to take the lead. Knox quickly responded with a layup to tie the game, but Edward answered back with a corner three to make it 41-38. The Sagehens held onto a 41-40 lead at the end of the period.
The Prairie Fire worked back to a 48-44 lead, but Madison Quan tried to bring the Sagehens back with a short-range jumper. After a jumper by Tamura tied the game, Knox bounced back with five straight points for a 53-48 lead. English took matters in her own hands, scoring the next five points, including a three pointer to tie the game. The two teams were tied at 53 apiece at the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime.
The two teams were neck-and-neck in the overtime period, with Knox lead 58-57 in the final minute. With four seconds left, English thought to have sealed the game with a three-pointer from the top of the perimeter with four seconds left to put the Sagehens ahead 60-58. However, Knox responded with a layup from McCall with 0.8 seconds left on the clock. The Sagehens called the timeout to advance the ball and draw up the game-winning shot for Anita for the victory.
