LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team came away with a big road win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 80-77 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Tents.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in the SCIAC this season.
The Sagehens were led by freshman Kamil English who notched her third 20+ point game this season with 21 points, five rebounds and five assists. Two other Sagehens hit double-digit scoring totals with freshman Carly Leong putting in 19 points and senior Anita Romero with 17.
The Sagehens and Leopards took part in a tightly contested first half with the two teams trading leads throughout the first quarter. La Verne found themselves with their largest lead of the quarter at 14-10 with 3:06 to go, but the Sagehens ended the quarter with a 9-3 run to take a two-point lead at 19-17 heading into the second.
Pomona-Pitzer started out the second quarter controlling the game as they extended their lead to the largest of the half at seven points with a 28-21 lead after a Romero layup with 7:39 left to go. The Leopards fought back late in the half and was able to close the gap on the Sagehens with the teams heading into the locker room tied at 33-33.
English and Romero led the Sagehens in the first half with nine points each and freshman Madison Quan gave the Sagehens a boost off of the bench with eight points. Pomona-Pitzer profited off of the Leopards' mistakes as the Sagehen defense forced La Verne to turn the ball over 15 times in the first half with 14 points off of those turnovers.
The Leopards came out of halftime and quickly got their offense going against the Sagehens. La Verne built a quick 47-41 lead just about midway through the quarter, but the Sagehens battled back to cut the deficit to just two points at 49-47 heading into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer had a big opportunity to put the game away in the fourth quarter as Leong converted a four-point play off of a three and a foul to put the Sagehens up 67-61. Leong then came back to steal the inbound and scored another and-one to complete a solo 7-0 run to put the Sagehens up 70-61 with 3:42 remaining.
After taking their largest lead of the game, the Sagehens were unable to stop the La Verne offense from making a comeback as the Leopards began to tie together some made jumpers and shut the Sagehens' offense down in the final three minutes of the game. La Verne had a chance to go up by one with seconds remaining but only converted one free-throw at the line as the teams prepared for overtime.
After a pair of layups to start the period, overtime turned into a free-throw contest in favor of the Sagehens. The Leopards fouled on back-to-back possessions that allowed Pomona-Pitzer to take a 78-75 lead after English converted three of her four free-throws. Pomona-Pitzer's defense came up big when it had to as the Leopards got tied up in a jump ball that gave the ball back to the Sagehens in a crucial possession of the game. After being forced to foul, Romero hit both of her free-throws at the line to extend the lead to 80-77 with no timeouts left for the Leopards. La Verne failed to get a final shot off before the buzzer and the Sagehens walked away with their first SCIAC road win this season.
