Los Angeles, Calif. - Sophomore Jana London (Chevy Chase, Md. - pictured) and senior Martha Marich (McLean, Va.) scored four goals apiece but it was not enough as Pomona-Pitzer fell 18-11 to Occidental in its regular season finale on Saturday.
The loss drops Pomona-Pitzer to 6-9 overall and 1-7 in the SCIAC, and it will open the conference tournament on Wednesday against Whittier at a site to be determined. Tori Larson had six goals and Sarah Kessler had five for Occidental, which improves to 12-2 overall and 6-2 in the SCIAC.
Marich had the first two goals for the Sagehens to keep the score 4-2 midway through the first half, but Kessler had back-to-back goals to cap off a 3-0 run and stretch the Tiger lead to 7-2. Kessler then capped off the first half scoring with her fourth goal of the opening stanza to make the score 11-4 at the break.
Kessler added her fifth goal to make it 13-4 early in the second half, before London and Marich scored back-to-back goals to give the Sagehens a glimmer of hope. However, the Tigers scored the next two goals to end any comeback hopes.
Freshman Julie Necarsulmer (Kennett Square, Pa.) added two goals for the Sagehens, and sophomore Logan Galansky (Denver, Colo.) had one. Sophomore goalie Casey Leek (Bucharest, Romania) had 12 saves for Pomona-Pitzer in goal.
