The Pomona-Pitzer women's lacrosse team opens up its schedule with a game against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the South Athletics Complex.
The Sagehens went 15-4 a season ago and 11-1 in conference play. Their only conference loss came against CMS as the Athenas stole a game away from the Sagehens with an 8-7 overtime win.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to win the SCIAC Tournament with a win against Occidental and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament before being knocked off by Trinity (Conn.).
Leading the Sagehens this season is senior Sarah Markowitz. Markowitz led the team in points during her junior season with 58 and was second on the team in goals with 40.
Returning for her senior season is Aubrey Douglass. Douglass was second on the team in points with 56 and tallied 20 goals and 36 assists.
Also helping the offense this season is junior Rebecca Long. Long tied for most goals a season ago with 41 and tallied 48 points. Filling out the remainder of the attackers will be freshmen Nicole Larson and Lilly Thomey who will both provide valuable minutes during their first collegiate seasons.
Also returning for her senior year is midfielder Ally McLaughlin. McLaughlin had a very consistent junior year as she totaled 19 goals and 17 assists for a combined 36 points.
The Sagehens will have a young defense to play with this season. Senior Makayla DeJong will play a big role in leading the defense for this season as freshman Lauren English, Hannah Chiu, Madeleine Halle and Tess Regan develop into solid defenders throughout the season.
In goal this season for the Sagehens will be juniors Gaby Fukumura and Delfina Gonzalez along with sophomore Mckenzie Scott. Fukumura led the Sagehens last season in goal as she tallied a 14-3 record and accumulated more than 140 saves.
Pomona-Pitzer will look to defend their title as SCIAC champs this season and have their sights set on another NCAA Tournament appearance.
