CLAREMONT, CA. – Three Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse players notched a hat-trick in the Sagehens' 18-5 win over non-conference opponent Augsburg on Monday morning at the South Athletics Complex.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 4-2 overall and remain at 3-1 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by Sonia Olson who netted a game-high five goals in the win. Lilly Thomey and Sophia Silane also earned hat-tricks with three goals each. Annie Price got the win in between the pipes for the Sagehens as she moves to 4-2 overall this season to go along with eight saves in the win.
Although the final score was lopsided, the Sagehens were in a tight battle throughout the first half against the Auggies. Olson got on the board first for the Sagehens but was shortly after followed by an Augsburg goal to tie the game at 1-1. Pomona-Pitzer then began to build up their first half lead with four goals in six minutes from Emma Sheridan, Olson and Sal Marx to take a 5-1 lead with 12:52 remaining in the half.
Augsburg scored their only other goal to end the half on a high note as they cut the lead down to 5-2 heading into the second half of play.
The Sagehens piled on the goals in the second half with a whopping 13 goals in the second half alone. Pomona-Pitzer got started early and often with four-straight goals to open up the half to take a commanding 9-2 lead.
The Auggies broke up the goal streak as they found the back of the net for the first time in the half with 23:33 remaining but the Sagehens responded with five goals in a row within a six-minute window to blow the game open at 14-3.
The Pomona-Pitzer offense was firing on all cylinders in the second half, which included hat-tricks in the half from Thomey and Silane while Sophie Hubbell added two goals and five assists all coming in the second half of play.
Pomona-Pitzer was able to take its foot off of the gas later on in the game as the Sagehens cruised to an 18-5 victory on day one of their non-conference spring break schedule.
