Women's Soccer Falls To Vanguard In Season Opener

Costa Mesa, Calif. – A penalty kick in the 74th minute provided the game's only goal as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team dropped a 1-0 road decision to Vanguard in its 2011 season opener on Saturday afternoon.

Gabby Valles converted the penalty kick for the Lions to break a scoreless deadlock after the Sagehens were whistled for a foul in the box. Rachel Eckerlin's bid for an equalizer in the 79th minute was saved by Vanguard goalkeeper Lauren Terry, and Allie Tao's shot in the closing seconds was saved by Terry, who finished off the shutout.

Terry had four saves for Vanguard, while Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Emma Wolfarth also had four saves in a losing cause. Eckerlin had three of the Sagehens' six shots on the day, two of which were saved, while Katie Robinson also had a shot on goal saved by Terry.

Vanguard finished with a 12-6 edge in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks on the day. Valles had a game-high five shots, including the penalty kick which proved to be the difference.
