LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 1-0 on Saturday night at Ortmayer Stadium.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 8-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in SCIAC play and now drop to third in the SCIAC standings with La Verne taking sole control of second place after the win.
Pomona-Pitzer was shutout for the second game in a row on the road as they drew with rival CMS 0-0 in their last game, which hasn't happened since the 2015 season where they fell in back to back road games 1-0 to CMS and Whittier.
The two teams played an identical first half from a statistics perspective as each team fired four shots with two shots on goal and each had one corner kick. With the stats being a mirror image of each other, both teams went into halftime tied at 0-0.
The difference in the game came in the 55th minute when the Leopards scored the only goal of the game. After the Sagehens cleared the ball towards the Leopards' backline, Alina Cobian sent a long ball all the way from the back of the La Verne defense that perfectly led Jessica Hernandez behind the Sagehens' defense and she was able to make a move and find the back of the net to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer had a few opportunities to score an equalizer late in the game but the La Verne keeper kept a clean sheet in the second half. With goals coming at a premium, the shot by Hernandez proved to be the deciding factor as the Sagehens fell on the road.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host SCIAC opponent Redlands on Wednesday, October 18th at 4:00 p.m.
