CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team fell to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier 2-1 in overtime on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens drop to 8-6-3 overall and 5-4-3 in SCIAC play this season.
The Sagehens were led by Bria VarnBuhler who netted the only goal for the Sagehens in the loss.
Pomona-Pitzer continues its winless streak to four-straight games as they have gone 0-2-2 during that stretch with just two goals scored. Goalkeeper Isa Berardo came away with a career-high eight saves in the loss as well.
The Sagehens fired off their fair share of shots throughout the game as Pomona-Pitzer ended the night with 16 shots with seven of them on goal. They were able to have one of those shots find the back of the net in the 37th minute as VarnBuhler scored her fifth goal of the season and allowed the Sagehens to play from in front.
Pomona-Pitzer kept their lead over the Poets for the remainder of the first half as they entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Whittier found their equalizer in the 63rd minute with a goal from Jazmin Gomez and put the pressure back on the Sagehens to try to find a go-ahead goal on the road. Neither team could break the tie in the 90 minutes of regulation as the two teams went into overtime.
The Poets scored the game winner just three minutes into the overtime period as Lauren Kai settled a cross into the box and put it top shelf past the Sagehen keeper to earn the win over Pomona-Pitzer at home.
