Lau Connects With Ponzio For Opener, Returns Favor For Second

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer Team earned their second win of the season after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Vanguard University on Labor Day. An early goal by Brianna Lau off an assist by first year Anna Ponzio and a second half goal by Ponzio off a corner from Lau propelled the Hens to victory.

Lau and Ponzio finished the match with a goal and assist each. It was Ponzio's second goal of the season while Lau had her second assist. Isa Berardo and Lindsey Uteda split goalkeeping duties, with Berardo collecting four saves in the first half and Uteda snatched six in the second half.

Season Impact: The Sagehens improve to a 2-0 record overall this season while the Vanguard Lions are now 4-1.

The Sagehens got to a bright start in the second minute when Ponzio dribbled into left side of the box and delivered low cross to the middle. Brianna Lau raced slid towards the net and connect with the ball for the opening goal.

Ponzio almost made it 2-0 at the 27th minute when Chloe Hamer whipped a high cross into the box and stood in the box looking to connect. The freshman took one bounce and delivered a roundhouse kick, but the Vanguard keeper, Haley Magana, made the save. Immediately, she ignited a counter with a quick throw-in to the racing Kelsey Bryant. She went on a solo run on the counterattack with only Berardo in her way, but the keeper stopped the attempt to keep the clean sheet.

Berardo provided more heroics with three minutes left in the first half when they snuffed a cross that came a foot away from connecting with a Vanguard player in the box.

In the second half, Ciannah Correa received the ball in the right wing and crossed it cleanly into the box, but Maya Nitchske-Alonso came short from converting the opportunity.

With 16:43 left in the game, Ayanna Suarez ripped a curling shot in a one-on-one opportunity in the box, but the Hens' second half keeper Uteda made a leaping dive and caught the shot with her outstretched arms.

In the 87th minute, the Sagehens finally saw double. After scoring off Ponzio's assist, Lau decided to return the favor, delivering a short pass off a corner. Ponzio collected the ball from the top right corner of the box and ripped a screamer that went between the keeper's legs to make it 2-0.

The Lions tried to muster a comeback, scoring in the 88th minute off a through-ball to Marielisa Hallam. However, the Hens held on to secure a 2-1 victory.
