LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team defeated Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent La Verne 1-0 on Wednesday night at Ortmayer Stadium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens won their second-straight game and improve to 10-2-1 overall and 7-2-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by junior Bria VarnBuhler who netted the only goal of the game in the win. Sophomore Chloe Hamer tacked on an assist to VarnBuhler's goal as well. Goalkeeper junior Isa Berardo registered yet another shutout in the win as they registered two saves in 90 minutes against the Leopards.
Pomona-Pitzer dominated play against the Leopards with the offense taking seven shots in the first and six shots in the second to outshoot La Verne 13-3 for the entire game.
Although the Sagehens took 13 shots, only three landed on goal as the Leopards defense did a good job to limit Pomona-Pitzer's scoring opportunities. The Sagehens got the game-winning goal in the 36th minute as some nice midfield play from the Sagehens led to freshman Emily Tomz springing Hamer free down the right side of the field. Hamer took the through ball and placed a perfect cross into the box that found VarnBuhler who connected first time to put the Sagehens up 1-0.
The Leopards tried to get back into the game in the second half but the Pomona-Pitzer defense posted its eighth shutout of the year to secure the road win.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host SCIAC opponent CMS on Saturday, October 13th at 11:00 a.m.
