No. 9 Women's Tennis Opens 2012 With 8-1 Win Over Cal Lutheran

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Sammy Chao didn't lose a single game in either singles or doubles as the No. 9 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team opened 2012 with an 8-1 win over Cal Lutheran on Friday.

The Sagehens, who are coming off a strong 2011 campaign which saw them advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament, begin the new season with a 1-0 record (1-0 SCIAC).

Chao took her No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0 and then teamed with Arthi Padmanabhan (pictured) for an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles, as she opened her season in dominant fashion by winning all 20 games she played in.

Padmanabhan, who was a first-team All-SCIAC selection last year, also got off to an impressive start to her spring campaign as she took the win at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-1.

Not every win was dominant for the Sagehens, as two players won long three-set battles to help Pomona-Pitzer to a sweep of the singles contests. Jamie Solomon, ranked No. 14 nationally in singles, defeated Cal Lutheran's Kim Kolilbas at No. 1 singles 6-4, 5-7, 11-9 to start out her season 1-0. Nicole Holsted also won an 11-9 decision in the third set at No. 4 singles, after falling 6-4 in the first set and bouncing back with a 6-1 win in the second.

Emily Kawahara won a straight set 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 5, while Jessica Hsu earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6. The only win for the Regals came at No. 1 doubles by a narrow 9-7 margin, as Kolibas and Holly Beaman edged Solomon and Wang.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday when it takes on No. 25 Vassar in its home opener.
