Sagehens Have Four Women's Tennis Players On All-SCIAC Teams

Claremont, Calif. - Senior Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif. - pictured) and freshman Mae Coyiuto (Makati City, Philippines) were named first-team All-SCIAC, while senior Kara Wang (Saratoga, Calif.) and junior Sammy Chao (Hong Kong) were named to the second team, it was announced this week.

Solomon and Wang both earned All-SCIAC honors for the fourth time in their careers, as they led the Sagehens to a 15-7 final record and a runner-up finish in the SCIAC and the NCAA Division III West Regionals. Chao was honored for the second time in her career, while Coyiuto earned all-conference accolades in her rookie season.

Solomon finished the year with a 12-11 record in singles, after coming back from an ACL injury suffered last summer at the NCAA Division III nationals. She missed the fall season and began this spring at No. 3 singles, but quickly worked her way back up to No. 1. Her comeback win provided the clinching point as the Sagehens defeated Redlands in the NCAA West Regional semifinals.

Coyiuto had a terrific freshman campaign, which saw her reach the semifinals of the ITA West Region Championships in the fall and the Ojai Valley Tournament in the spring. She ended with a 17-6 record in the spring (21-7 including the Fall ITA championships) and was 7-2 in league matches on the year.

Chao shook off a slow start to the season playing at No. 1 singles and ended up with an 8-10 overall record, including 5-4 in the SCIAC. She also played at No. 1 doubles with Wang, where the two players ended up with a 14-10 overall record (8-2 in SCIAC).

Chao and Wang were invited to compete in the NCAA Division III Doubles Championships, which will be held on May 23-25 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
