Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team moved up from No. 12 to No. 6 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III national rankings, which were released today.
The Sagehens began the year at No. 10, held there after the ITA Indoor Nationals on Feb. 28-March 2, and slipped to No. 12 in the rankings released two weeks ago. However, in the two weeks since, Pomona-Pitzer defeated the No. 6 (Middlebury), No. 7 (Bowdoin), No. 8 (Carnegie Mellon), No. 13 (Redlands) and No. 16 (Whitman) teams in the nation.
The Sagehens also played their best tennis most recently, with an 8-1 win over Middlebury on Saturday followed by an 8-1 win over Whitman on Sunday, which gave them the championship of the inaugural Hen-Athena Tournament, which they co-hosted with CMS.
The top five held steady, with Johns Hopkins, Williams, Emory, Amherst and CMS holding down the 1-5 spots in order. The Sagehens face No. 2 Williams on Saturday at 4 p.m. (a match which was originally scheduled for Sunday) and No. 5 CMS on April 5 in a pair of big contests at Pauley Tennis Complex in the next 10 days.
